Five Leftover Christmas Dinner Ideas

Ah we love a good traditional Christmas dinner, but there’s always so much leftover food and you may not fancy warming it up again for the same again the next day, so what can you do? We’ve gathered up some of our favourite leftover Christmas dinner meal ideas from the lovely people right here at Eventa HQ to give you some tasty inspiration, which will see you through for the next few days!

Boxing Day Platter

It’s Boxing day and you’re feeling pretty full from Christmas day’s indulgences, but you’re still feeling peckish. You’ve had your fair share of Quality Street orange creams, but now you’re feeling the urge for some decent food that isn’t too full on. So how about creating a delicious cold platter for the family to enjoy?

There’s nothing better than a selection of juicy cold leftover meats, a mouth-watering array of dips and crisps and a lovely selection of Mediterranean delights like olives and sun-dried tomatoes! We’re feeling all hungry just thinking about it!

Bridget Jones’ mum had the right idea with the turkey curry buffet in the first movie and we can really see why – it’s delicious and totally easy to whip up (especially if you’re opting to use a jar sauce and not creating it all from scratch!)

So whether you’re after Korma, Tika Masala or another one of your favourites, this is a hassle free meal option to use up more of your leftover turkey. If you’re a vegetarian, then how about using up some of those vegetables and throwing them in along with some of your leftover Quorn roast? Serve with some poppadum’s, some naan and mango chutney and voila!

Soup is a great way of using up any old vegetables from dinner and creating a nice thick soup. Use a tin of standard tomato soup as a base and place into the blender. Now, depending on what you’ve got left (and what you think will make a great combination) add to the mixture. Personally, we think you can’t go wrong with blending the tomato base with onions, courgettes, carrots and parsnips for the ultimate vegetable soup. We think it’s probably safe to say leave the stuffing out of this one!

Turkey soup also makes for an exceptional meal and tastes great served with a fresh crusty roll with some lashings of butter – delicious!

Bubble and Squeak

Another great one for using up those Christmas day vegetables is a classic serving of bubble and squeak. All you need to do is shallow fry your potato, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots and peas. Work everything down in the pan so that the mixture covers the base of the pan.  When the mixture starts to catch, then flip it over and fry the other side. This is a quick and effective side to serve with a sumptuous fry up – you can be sure that the whole family will love this!

In all honesty, sometimes you just can beat a good old fashioned turkey sandwich. But if you want something a bit more exciting than sandwiching some turkey between two slices of Hovis, then how about making a hot and tasty panini? Add some brie cheese and cranberry for a really scrumptious festive delight!

Design themes for a sparkling Christmas table

When it comes to Christmas, one of the main events of the day is of course the rather brilliant Christmas dinner, so why not go all out and take a focus on dressing the table to create that extra sparkle for the occasion? We’ve come up with our favourite five themes which will make your table design really stand out this coming Christmas, so take a read of our ideas and be prepared to feel inspired!

Traditional Festive Setting

If you want to stick with what you know and keep to a classic table dressing this festive season, then why not inject a bit of oomph into your usual Christmas design? Of course, keep to all those traditional reds and greens with maybe some gold thrown in for good measure, but how about mixing it up and using a red tartan tablecloth instead of the usual red? Add a stunning centrepiece into the middle of the table – choose from centrepieces such as a Christmas tree, reindeer or even a nativity scene which will bring that festive spirit alive!

Glitz and glamour

Using rich colours such as purple, this setting projects a very royal and regal feel and simply oozes glitz and glamour for a truly VIP setting! We love the idea of using purple napkins (the purple gingham design pictured here is particularly lovely!) and incorporating frosted glass plates in purple. Team this with stainless steel cutlery and add elements of silver for a breath-taking and stunning festive table setting. We especially like the idea of using little decorations in the shape of parcels, which look seriously cute!

Winter Wonderland

The Winter Wonderland is a beautiful theme for your Christmas dinner table, which focuses on creating a serene and stunning setting with blue, white and silver colours. We’d suggest using a white tablecloth, plain white plates and introducing the colour blue subtly – you can do this by working it into your Christmas crackers, or by tying ribbons onto chair backs. Spray painting some pine cones silver is also a fantastic look for your winter wonderland table.

Another great idea is to use white or blue fairy lights to decorate the dining room for that extra Christmas impact. This setting really does make for a memorable and magical atmosphere which the whole family can enjoy.

Glitter and Gold

All that glitters is not gold…well in this case it certainly is, because this is one grand theme for a truly luxury themed Christmas table setting that will be sure to impress guests alike. For this one, set the scene by using a gold coloured table cloth – make it as subtle or as sparkly as you like! Some tips for decorating this one would be to scatter some gold sequins across the table and introducing some gold lanterns with tea candles in them.

If you’d prefer, you could put some candles in gold coloured holders for a classy look. Finish the look with plain white plates and stainless steel cutlery for a standout table setting that really has the wow factor.

Kitsch Christmas

We love this minimalistic theme which uses an uncovered wooden table and is kitted out with some gingham napkins and mats (we suggest red gingham, which incorporates that festive element of Christmas!) and quirky decorations which have been arranged on the table.

If you’re after some inspiration, then how about some candy canes, plastic stars or a few pine cones? You could even spray-paint the pine cones red if you fancy an injection of colour. Finish off the look with some red handled cutlery and you could even create your own quirky placemats for that personal touch.

Bizarre Christmas Traditions

We’re all familiar with hanging stockings on the mantelpiece, opening the advent calendar and leaving mince pies out for Santa Claus, but there are some weird and wonderful traditions from around the world that other countries have when it comes to Christmas time. Here we take a look at some of the most unusual and where they come from.

The people from Greenland have a delightful treat to tempt the taste buds at Christmas time. It consists of the raw flesh of an auk – which is a little bird that looks a little like a penguin and also known as a kiviak. The meat of the bird is buried beneath a stone to decompose, wrapped in sealskin, the whole process takes several months and results in a very pongy snack. Have a think about that next time you’re complaining about sprouts!

In Portugal, they have an unusual tradition which includes sitting down for a large feast known as the “Consoda” feast. Nothing strange so far, except that extra places are set for guests who have passed away. Food is offered to the souls so that they might look after the family and bring them luck. It’s quite a nice thought, though just a little bit creepy!

In Latvia, they spread out the Christmas presents, with one being given on each of the 12 days of Christmas beginning on Christmas Eve. We’re not sure we’d have the patience to last that long before opening our presents! On Christmas day, a traditional Latvian Christmas meal is brown peas and bacon, pies, cabbage and sausage… a little different from turkey and veg!

The Norwegians take no chances when it comes to anything spoiling Christmas day, and that includes pesky witches that might want to shake things up a little. How do you stop a witch? By hiding her broom apparently! Yes, all brooms are to be hidden in Norway on Christmas Eve… that’ll teach them!

Czech Republic

All the single ladies, now put your hands up… and reach for a shoe. What? Yes, in the Czech Republic, girls can tell their dating fate with this simple test. Standing on your front door, facing inside, throw one of your shoes over your shoulder. This simple, yet highly scientific prediction process will let you know if you are to be wed within the year. If the toe is facing the door then it will be the chiming of bells before the year’s end. Heel facing the door and you should get out there with the mistletoe!

These are just a few of our favourites, but trust us, Christmas is a weird and wonderful time of year, throughout the world!
