Three of the Best Places for a Christmas Party

Our good friend Craig from has some suggestions for your Christmas party venues in this article:

Christmas is quite some way off yet, although the weather we are having heading into April would make it seem otherwise!

It’s important to get planning for Christmas early though, and not to leave it until the last minute, as this is when we find ourselves rushing into a last minute decision that isn’t to everyone’s tastes.

When it comes to planning for a Christmas party, it can be a right pain trying to book a venue where everyone will be happy to go. Whether you are part of a large company or a small company, it can be difficult pleasing everyone.

Therefore, we have picked a few locations where most people will enjoy and if you get in early enough you won’t have to worry about panicking at the last minute!

At a Hotel

My first choice is to go with a hotel venue that is holding some kind of party event. The idea with this is that you kill two birds with one stone.

What does everyone do on a Christmas party? They drink, so having a place to stay overnight is what most people like to do. Depending on what hotel you book with, most have a banquet hall or ballroom that can easily fit your office party into.

Add to that the fact that you can have a dance, do some karaoke, and help yourself to a fully catered buffet, then you will pretty much have something that most people can relate to in some way.

Comedy Clubs

We actually went to a comedy club a few years ago for a Christmas party and it was one of the best nights I have had. The key to this is not to sit at the front, as you are putting yourself up as prey sitting so close to the stage!

Here you can enjoy a night of laughs, while sitting down to a three-course meal.

Go To The Races

Another favourite is to go to the horses or the greyhounds. I know a lot of these places cater for Christmas parties, and a lot of them will give you your own room or box.

This event will keep you busy all night and the chances of getting bored are second to none!

You can have either a buffet style meal or a sit down three-course meal, while trying your luck on a few cheeky bets. You never know, you may leave the place better off then when you arrived.

Having a corporate party? Why a live band will rock your event!

Guest Post from our friends at Alive Network – Online Live Music & Entertainment Booking Service.

In today’s economic climate, it’s not enough just to give your clients or employees a ‘nice’ corporate event – you need to wow them, entertain them and energise them about your event, your products – your company.

And all this at a time when corporate entertainment budgets are being squeezed and value for money is so important.

Sounds impossible right? Well…

A live band is one of the best ways to inject enjoyment, energy and fun into any corporate event. A live performance by a professional or function band is so much more than just music; it’s a great show packed with songs everyone knows and loves, and a shared experience that guests can enjoy and talk about for weeks afterwards.

There’s an energy to live music you just don’t get from recordings, and it has absolutely nothing to do with volume or stage size. The best corporate function bands can delight a roomful as easily as they can thrill a large marquee or ballroom, and it’s all down to what they play.

The best UK corporate events bands have the experience, professionalism and imagination to create a show that suits your audience and guests. By playing the most famous tunes by top artists from the 1960s to today’s number one hits, everyone knows a song or two, from the youngest whizzkid in IT to the most senior of board members. And with so many international artists and globally-loved songs to choose from, your foreign guests or delegates will always feel part of the party!

As a result, performances by live bands for hire are also great ‘levellers’ – you’ll find guests of all ages up and dancing given half the chance, and those just relaxing and watching will have their feet tapping or be humming along.

If at this point you know your CEO/manager/MD is sooo not going for this, here’s a thought. A live band doesn’t have to play pop or rock. So get around them by suggesting:

• A jazz band to entertain during drinks on the terrace of your conference hotel
• A soul band for a smother, cooler class of entertainment after a long day of work?
• A Rat Pack singer and big band playing a set that exudes sophistication for a dinner of top execs and management?
• A swing band or a salsa band to get absolutely everyone up and dancing?
It’s as simple as that, so next time you’re given the task of organising the corporate entertainment, why not rock the party with some of the UK’s best bands to hire. Your guests will love it, your colleagues will love it, and you’ll get all the praise and glory for having booked them. Job done!

2013 Oscars – They really know how to throw a party!

So the 2013 Oscars have been and gone and boy was it a show! We here at the Eventa office were buzzing before the event (it gets us just as excited as Christmas party season!) and we couldn’t wait to get home, settle down on the sofa in our pyjamas, stuff ourselves with bad food and clutch our own fake plastic Oscars in celebration.

O.K. maybe not everybody watched the Academy Awards like that but I certainly did! In fact, I won best actress for my role in the 2012 Christmas email marketing campaign and I wore a rather fetching fuzzy dressing gown by none other than the talented Dorothy Perkins (with matching slippers – of course!)

All silliness aside though, it was a great show and many brilliant actors & actresses who won really deserved their award(s). Anyway if you didn’t catch it and you only want to know who the winners are then have a gander below…

  • Best Picture: Argo
  • Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
  • Actress: Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook
  • Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained
  • Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables
  • Directing: Ang Lee, Life of Pi
  • Foreign Language Film: Amour
  • Adapted Screenplay: Chris Terrio, Argo
  • Original Screenplay: Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained
  • Animated Feature Film: Brave
  • Production Design: Lincoln
  • Cinematography: Life of Pi
  • Sound Mixing: Les Miserables
  • Sound Editing (tie): Skyfall, Zero Dark Thirty
  • Original Score: Life of Pi, Mychael Danna.
  • Original Song: “Skyfall” from Skyfall, Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth.
  • Costume: Anna Karenina.
  • Documentary Feature: Searching for Sugar Man.
  • Documentary (short subject): Inocente
  • Film Editing: Argo
  • Makeup and Hairstyling: Les Miserables
  • Animated Short Film: Paperman
  • Live Action Short Film: Curfew
  • Visual Effects: Life of Pi

Well done everyone! Ah I wish I got an invite… Still,  invite or not it doesn’t mean that I can’t throw my own Hollywood red carpet party!

So if (like me) you fancy throwing a high class, Academy Award worthy event  this year – then we can help! After all we are Oscar party mad  here at Eventa HQ and (if I’m invited) I promise I won’t wear my fuzzy slippers!

Top 3 Trending Event Themes in 2012

O.K. so the year isn’t over yet, however the Christmas season is fast approaching (yes we’ve seen the adverts on the T.V too) and we’ve been getting requests for Christmas party theme ideas.

So to help you all out, we’ve had a look through our party records and come up with this list of top 3 party theme ideas. Some of these themes have been inspired by T.V, some by film, others are tried and tested themes that we’ve seen countless times. What do they all have in common? Well they were all very popular this year! So without further delay let’s start with…

Mad Men

Since hitting our screens back in 2007 “Mad Men” has catapulted all things retro back into fashion with its style and flair. Naturally it wasn’t long before people started having “Mad Men” themed parties. These parties saw guests dress up in their finest 60’s gear and enjoy true retro themed drinks and cuisine. So if you don’t mind dressing up in “office clothes” for a themed corporate party then this is a stylish theme that will certainly have everybody looking smart and sharp!

Rule Britannia

This year has been a great year for Great Britain: we’ve had the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee all in the same year! As a result of this, patriotism has gone through the roof and everywhere we look UK citizens are embracing “all things British.” So if you’re feeling the Union Jack love then why not have a British themed party? Guests can come dressed as their favourite UK heroes and the food & drink can be an extravagant homage to the best of British.

Now this may seem more like a Halloween theme but believe us zombie parties have been cropping up everywhere (we blame “The Walking Dead” which has been huge this year.) The great thing about this theme is that guests can really go all out and really get into character and costume. Plus those who don’t fancy getting “zombie-fide” can just come dressed as themselves (or as we like to think potential “zombie victims”.) Perfect for a fun office that wants a break from conventional themes!

So if you’ve stumbled across this whilst Googling for “Christmas party Leeds 2012” then consider yourself lucky. After all, now you might not need to think of a theme! But if some of these trending themes seem a bit too much or too “out there”… Then you could always just go with the classic “Celebrity red carpet” theme (it is a classic after all!)

The office Secret Santa doesn’t have to be a present buying minefield

As Christmas begins to creep up on us (I noticed DFS have started mentioning Christmas in their adverts, before we know it that Coca Cola advert will be on our screens), all that comes with the festive period starts to cloud your thoughts. With so much to consider, arrange and worry about, the last thing you probably want to be thinking about is what to buy a work colleague. Yes, I’m talking about the office tradition that is Secret Santa! As if the office Christmas party wasn’t enough huh?! Some people may find this a daunting and draining experience, but it doesn’t have to be!

First of all you’ll find out who you’ve got in the Secret Santa draw. For some people it feels like a lottery where there are only losers, but take just a few things into consideration and you’ll be able to unearth a present no matter who you have to buy for.

Type of person, how well do you know them?

Now you know who you are buying for, but how well do you know them? If they’re a casual workplace acquaintance you may have your work cut out a little bit, but you can still do this!

Take a look at their work desk, if they have a lot of ‘stuff’ then chances are you’ll be able to get away with something simple that will still be appreciated. For instance, a jar of sweets for the office sweet tooth, or a USB drink warmer for the office caffeine addict show thought, time and effort have gone into your gift.

If you’re lucky enough you may get a close work friend in the Secret Santa. I’ll assume you know enough about each other to be able to find a suitable present no matter the price limit.

Is there a price limit?

That leads me rather nicely onto my next hint. If there is a price limit this can make your life a whole lot easier, or even harder. If the limit is a low price, say £10 or even £5 you can probably get away with a fun present. That’s how I’ve always done it, if it’s £5 or under you can definitely go down the joke present route.

The best Secret Santa present I received for under £5 was a gold shower radio in the shape of a microphone, which my better half absolutely loved.

If the limit is a little higher then thought and time definitely needs to enter the equation. Like I’ve already said, a quick look at your colleague’s desk (or even their social media profiles) can provide you with plenty of ideas and inspiration. Hey, they might even have an Amazon wishlist, in which case you’ve struck gold!

Still stuck? Wing it

OK, not the best piece of advice to give, but if you are absolutely stuck just go for it. If your colleagues are a fun loving bunch (like we are here at Eventa!) then you can get away with buying almost anything for your Secret Santa. I’ve been with Eventa for a couple of weeks now but I already know that if Secret Santa makes an appearance that there will be some incredible presents doing the rounds.

No Secret Santa? No problem

Your office may forego the Secret Santa tradition, in which case you’ve got nothing to worry about. However, it won’t be quite as fun for your office come that last day before your Christmas break!

Hopefully these hints and tips will help take some of the stress away from buying your Secret Santa present, and make this time of year more enjoyable no matter who you’re buying presents for!

UK companies offering thousands of temporary positions over festive period

A number of companies are set to give people some festive cheer by creating thousands of temporary Christmas jobs. Employers are rolling out scores of temporary positions, which will benefit thousands of people across the UK who are currently looking for work.

Perhaps most exciting of all for the people set to benefit from the seasonal rush, is that they could even get to attend company Christmas parties, which as we all know is always a highlight of the year.

Marks and Spencer leads the way, with plans to offer 20,000 temporary jobs over the Christmas period. Supermarket Sainsburys isn’t too far behind, with 15,000 temporary roles set to be advertised. Argos is also creating 12,000 temporary positions. Although initially hired in temporary roles, outstanding performers could well be employed on a permanent basis, much like Marks and Spencers did last Christmas. Figures show that more than one in five temporary employees was made permanent after their temporary contact came to an end in 2011.

Even considering the current economic climate, Christmas will be a busy time of year for most businesses. This works for both employers and employees, and with recent reports suggesting that the economy could be slowly recovering, temporary employees will be aiming to impress their employers if there is the possibility of a full time contract at the end of it.

Once such company that foresees a particularly busy Christmas season is Amazon, who is planning to make available 10,000 temporary jobs to assist with the millions of additional orders the website sees during the busy festive period.

Furthermore, with Christmas preparations seemingly coming earlier each year (especially in Brighton), some temporary workers can expect anything for a few days to an extra month of work compared to previous years. This can only be good news for the UK economy. For instance, temporary jobs at Argos typically last for around three months, and seasonal workers are also made aware of the potential to be made permanent. So temporary workers should remember, a job isn’t just for Christmas, it could potentially be permanent!

This year celebrate your office Christmas party… Medieval style!

We love a good old classic Charles Dickens-esque Christmas here at Eventa, but after a while it all starts to blur into one big evening of crackers and Christmas pudding. So if like us, you’re aching for something a little out of the ordinary (and dare we say it… a little bit more “magical”?) then our Medieval Christmas parties are just what you need! In fact you have three parties to choose from…

A Medieval Banquet Christmas

The king of all our themed parties, this event is a fantasy spectacle to behold! Guests will be whisked away from the 21st century and seated in a superbly decorated venue, before being served a hearty five course meal (which even includes unlimited wine and beer too!) The evening also includes two hours of live medieval entertainment, from sword fighting knights, aerial hoop artists to hand balancing performers. This event is not to be missed! Ah but I bet your thinking, “What!? There’ll be no disco?” Of course there’ll be! Because even though the 16th century wasn’t famous for its disco, we’ve made a special exception and made sure that there’ll be an opportunity for you to show off your amazing “robot” to all the knights and princesses present at the event.

A Medieval Christmas Luncheon

For those who are too busy slaying dragons in the evening, we’ve taken our renowned Medieval Banquet Christmas party and made it available during the day time! This party includes a sumptuous five course meal and half a bottle of wine per person. Not to mention the fantastically themed venue, which will be decorated in a way that will have you convinced your back in the middle ages. Entertainment for the evening will consist of jugglers, jesters and jousters (just to name a few!) As well as a very (un)authentic medieval disco. So grab your armour (coat) and prepare the steed (car) because this party is going to be quite an adventure!

Snow White’s Winter Nights

O.K. so this party is more Brothers Grimm than it is King Arthur but we included it in this trinity anyway! Hosted in a giant Gothic cellar, this party will see you and yours being served by friendly tavern girls who will serve you your five course meal, as well as top up your glass with unlimited wine/beer.  To keep you entertained there will be magicians, acrobats and costumed actors to really bring the theme to life. Plus, this year (for the first time ever) the venue will be holding a winter market which can be included in your group’s plans (please enquire for availability.)

Trust us these fantastical parties are definitely a unique experience that need to be sampled (if you haven’t done so already!) Even if you aren’t a fan of all things dungeons and dragons, these events will have you immersed in the medieval atmosphere and wanting your own coat of arms in no time.

Cambridge Christmas Researchers: Who Colour Coded Christmas?

When you think of the festive season there can be no more resounding an image than that of the almighty ringleader, Santa Claus, all dressed up in his red garments, plus the brilliant green glow of the Christmas tree. This combination of colours has traditionally been thought to have originated from the Victorian times, a period when the celebration process surrounding Christmas as we know it today, such as giving cards and dining on turkey, was really brought to life.

However, researchers at the University of Cambridge have found reason to believe that the colour coding of Christmas originated from centuries before and that the Victorians were merely modernising an age old celebratory concept, an interesting revelation ahead of Cambridge Christmas parties season. The artwork on rood screens used to separate church navels from the chancel in the 14th and 15th centuries were often painted in red and green, as a way of expressing a particular feeling. This, the researchers say, is where the festive colours were first conceived before the public eye.

Christmas in Cambridge this year is all about tradition. It was always an objective of ours in 2011 to ensure that each of our Christmas party locations promoted events that reflected an element of that place’s vibe. For example, our Manchester parties are all about music and Cambridge sees Santa’s Rudolph, Dasher and Comet immortalised over the course of three exciting events in December. Reindeers may not have much in common with Cambridge, you may be thinking, yet the traditions of Cambridge’s University and architecture tied in nicely to the concept of Santa and his reindeers.

As far as Christmas party ideas go, our Cambridge events are looking rather bold this time around. The Rudolph chapter sees an exquisite four course menu lining up alongside picturesque festive decorations and a rocking disco running through to the early hours. We suggest a red tie and green hat pulled from your crackers for these Christmas parties!
