Thousands of people converged on Manchester over the course of the August Bank Holiday weekend. No, not to soak up the sunshine in Piccadilly Gardens or to sip on cool drinks at Deansgate Locks, but to witness grown men and women wrestling whilst covered in and wading through gravy. Yes, perhaps the messiest sporting contest on the planet drew huge crowds to the Rose N Bowl pub in Stacksteads, Lancashire on Monday, the audience no doubt particularly keen to catch a glimpse of minor celebrities such as Rory McGrath and Will Mellor battling it out in the midst of gallons of Sunday roast accompaniment. And don’t worry folks, Eventa Christmas parties in Manchester won’t be re-using any foodstuffs from the championships!
Contestants grappled with one another in a 16-foot wide, ankle-deep pool of hot onion gravy but luckily the local fire brigade were on hand to hose people down afterwards. Not that they really needed the service, the rain pouring down relentlessly throughout the day. Nevertheless, the people came in their droves, with pub landlord Caroline Lowe declaring: “It was amazing to see so many people brave the awful weather. We were delighted with the turnout.”
In a slightly more classy turn of affairs and at the opposite end of the Manchester events scale comes Glitz And Glam, a set of exclusive Christmas parties to be held at the newly revamped National Football Museum. Guests will have exclusive access to the gallery during the drinks reception but there won’t be any form of wrestling to distract you from the sparkling and contemporary beauty of the Christmas party theming lovingly put together throughout. And we’re pretty sure that Messrs McGrath and Mellor won’t be inducted into the Hall of Fame any time soon, but it will be providing an amazing setting for dinner, which does include gravy should you be into that sort of thing!
