Nottingham city council have announced a rather cunning way of promoting a more Al Fresco drinking and dining culture this year. Temporary removal of parking bays and the narrowing of the road way to three metres will allow restaurants and bars space to set up more tables and chairs outside their establishments. Planters will then keep customers separated from the flow of traffic. Spearheaded by councillor Jane Urquhart, the scheme was designed to promote a more ‘European outdoor cafe culture’ and to ‘benefit the whole area’. What a marvellous idea indeed!

When the notion of the Christmas market comes to mind, one immediately thinks of snow-covered wooden huts plying Curryworst, home-made mulled wine and sugar-coated sweets. The overall atmosphere created is of a cosy winter wonderland, illuminated by the smell of amazing food, twinkling lights and excited chatter. It is a scene that will decorate Newcastle city centre at Christmas time, the council having announced that the Continental and Christmas markets will remain open between 21 November and 11 December. It is something that has inspired To Russia With Love Newcastle over the last couple of years and 2011′s event looks set to take the crown as the North-East’s Christmas party of the year.

This magical 2011 Christmas party incorporates spectacular scenery as its centrepiece. Our fabulous hosts will be painstakingly recreating the Tsar’s palace and surrounding it with snow-covered pine trees to create the aura of an enchanted winter scene.
