Christmas Party fancy dress ideas

A good way of spicing up Christmas parties, which can be rather formulaic year-on-year, is to make it fancy dress.

Office Christmas parties can need a kick start to get everyone in the mood to party and then before long the guests are well on their way to drinking far too much brandy, mulled wine and everything else stocked behind the bar.

So if the party is to be fancy dress what are your options for outfits that will stand you out from the crowd, or leave guests wondering who it is behind the mask or decorations.

The obvious choice is a Santa outfit for the men, who don’t need to hold on their beer belly for a night, while the sexy Santa outfits are always a big success. However, it is predictable and a little boring, especially after the ‘you can sit on my knee’ line has been used a dozen times.

Santa of course needs little helpers, so if you don’t mind playing second fiddle to the man in red and white you can come as an elf, or if you’re feeling particularly adventurous a reindeer, although you do not want to be lumbered eating carrots all night long.

One that is usually only for the ladies is to come as an angel with wings and halo, or on a similar theme a fairy complete with her magic wand.

You could come dressed all in white and be a snowman, or a snowwoman of course, but there are costumes out there for those that want to be an inanimate object during the Christmas party night.

Come as a Christmas present and wait to be unwrapped, or come as a Christmas tree and see you have hanging off your arm by the end of the night? We’ve also seen Christmas pudding costumes, but the danger with this one is being set alight with brandy.

Ideas for a Successful Secret Santa

You may want to organise a Secret Santa in your office this Christmas to be hosted at the Christmas party. For those who don’t know what one is, the idea is very simple and a lot of fun. Everyone who wants to participate has their names put into a hat on pieces of paper. Each person then takes turns to pick their name out of the hat. A token gift of a fixed amount is then bought for the person they have drawn out of the hat, but the sender never reveals their identity. It’s a fun and enjoyable way to give gifts to one another without the added pressure of everyone knowing who bought what gift. “Smellies”

These are perfect if you don’t really know the person that well. You can find a whole range of packaged items like these in most shops at Christmas time. They’re a great gift idea, and you can choose from a variety of styles, whether it’s luxurious bubble bath, or perhaps a home pedicure set as a treat for someone on their feet all day. One word of advice, don’t just buy someone deodorant – the theme should be luxury, not basic personal hygiene.

Chocolates

Another gift which always goes down well, and Christmas is the time for indulgence in food and drink. The best thing about buying chocolates for someone as well is that they usually get opened there and then and you can enjoy them too! Not that that is what buying Christmas gifts is all about of course…

Alcohol

This is better if you know the person, but you can find some lovely miniature gift sets with some lip-smacking tipples inside to match most preferences. You can keep it festively themed with a port or sherry, or perhaps you know they love their lager and buy them a bucket full! The Gadget / Gizmo

If you have someone in your office who loves their technology, then you’ll want to boost their collection with another gadget or thingummy. Whether it’s a miniature remote controlled car, or a key ring banjo tuner, the best thing about a Secret Santa is that the emphasis is usually on novelty items, so the more outrageous and funny gizmo you can find the better!

The aim of the Secret Santa is supposed to be fun, and remember that even if you don’t know who bought you your present; chances are they’re in the room when you open it, so practice your grateful look, the one you use for your aunt’s sweaters. Even if the gift is vile and you’ll be finding a bin for it straight away, that’s not the spirit of the Christmas party… so smile!

If you’ve decided to host the Christmas party at your office, you might want some party games ideas to break the ice and get people laughing. Here are some simple but fun party games that are easy to set up and get everyone involved.

Partner Wrapping Race

With this game, people work in pairs. Each pair has tape, scissors, wrapping paper and a box to wrap. The aim of the game is to wrap the box as quickly as possible, except there’s a twist. One person can only use their left hand, and the other person can only use their right hand. It’s a great game to ensure lots of laughter and also a good way of encouraging team spirit!

Company Quiz

This is an interesting game to see how much the employees (and employers!) know about the company. For it to be entertaining, it can be prepared prior to the party and perhaps put together as a presentation. Try to come up with the strangest facts and information about the business and see who gets the most answers right – the outcome might be surprising!

Steal it Secret Santa

This is a fun and simple game that can reveal the true nature of your colleagues! If you run a secret Santa at your office, you could try this version with a twist. Everyone buys a present for no one in particular. Everyone picks a number from a hat to determine the order and number one goes first. The first person picks a present and opens it. Person number two then opens another gift and can decide whether to keep that gift, or steal person number one’s gift, and swap. Person number three then also takes a gift and can decide to keep that or swap with any opened gift. It’s quite funny to watch as some people get very attached to their gifts that can be taken away at any moment!

The Humming Game

Very simple, have a list of songs in a hat, split into two teams and take it in turns for people to hum the song to their team. They have to guess it within a minute or the other team has a chance to guess. The team with the most correct guesses wins.
